12 Practical Ways to Improve Your Home’s Entryway

The front entrance to your home is a big part of the first impression your dwelling makes on passers-by, neighbors, guests, and—should you ever decide to sell—potential buyers. It has a powerful effect on your home’s curb appeal (or lack thereof), and it can add to or detract from your home’s value, as well.

Finding tasteful ways to improve your home’s entryway makes your entire property seem more welcoming and appealing. Here are some suggestions as to how you can approach front entrance enhancements and upgrades.

How to Enhance Your Home’s Front Entrance

  1. Put in a custom paver walkway leading up to your front entrance. A professionally installed path 3 to 4 feet wide is a functional way to add visual appeal and a welcoming message. This is one of the leading front yard improvements to boost curb appeal and home value.
  1. Don’t forget to install beautiful lighting along your paver walkway!
  1. Add a pop of color by painting your front door an attractive accent color that works well with your style of home.
  1. Or, add color, warmth, and some natural beauty with potted flowers on your front porch or patio, or with planters or a flower bed alongside your home’s front entry.
  1. Place a small water feature on the front porch or patio, hang a ceramic mosaic or other suitable piece of outdoor art near the front door, or otherwise add an elegant decorative item to the entrance.
  1. Neatly trim back bushes, hedges, tree limbs, or other plant protrusions that obscure or obstruct the path leading up to and into your house.
  1. Replace old or standard house numbering with a new, elegant, unique style of house number. This is one of the quickest, simplest ways to improve your home’s entryway and ways to increase overall curb appeal.
  1. Install a nice new doorbell.
  1. Install an attractive new back plate for the doorknob and/or peephole.
  1. Enhance the architecture at the entrance by adding trim, molding, columns, decorative brackets, or similar features. Just make sure they complement your home’s style and existing architecture.
  1. Put a small roof or awning over your front door if it’s uncovered. People always appreciate protection from the rain when they’re standing there waiting.
  1. If you’re up for a project, add windows that extend the full height of the front door alongside the door. This not only makes your home seem more attractive and welcoming, it’s also a great way to bring more natural light into your foyer or the inside of your entrance.
